new turn for things

before the day ended , elain showed my the forms of shizue kato , a talented and inspirational ceramicist
this mixed with the work of karen morgan became the basis for my next few pieces

Avideo of what my new forms will be based on , created from a rectangular piece of cut and rolled clay , joined together and then slapped at an angle to create a wave like pattern/form

a quick video

a video of the segmented shapes before reforming ..

sequential creating

Choosing the snail like forms for my next part , i thought to myself how would this/these piece(s) change or mutate if they were elongated or stretched ... or even cut into segments ?

with this in mind i rolled one of the snails out into a long flat smooth length and then coiled that together to form my segmented piece .. as i thought a plain cut segment may look slightly unappealing to the eye !

this progressed to larger segments playing with their shape and thickness as well as viewpoints

in a more minimalistic fashion i tested out how i could create the spiral coil without using so much clay

braiding the clay also factored in to this experiment

never happy with a piece how it is , i cut the braided clay into segments of equal length  and used them to create a new piece

however i then took this new piece and used it to create another .. a more textured version of the loop

i then cut this up tp form different letters

i also played around with slapping the clay and elongating it

not wasting

from there we were told yet again to pick one piece to develop from, not wanting to be wasteful i created more forms from these pieces.

up close this piece reminded me of a little clay family

Ceramics week 1 day 1

for the sequential development part of my creations i started off with a series of simple shapes.
i started with simple spherical shapes playing with scale, i started off small and increased the size , like rolling a snowball/snowman. From there i joint the balls together to make piles/ forms , i was constantly reshaping and improving the original shape than moving onto a new one. to investigate how far i could take the form.

playing with scale i also created a series of slugs and snails , with little antennae and mouths .. adding a little humour and extra bit of fun to the exercise.

Ceramics Elective week 1 day 1

we started off our week on the monday morning with a 30 minute shape building exercise, here we were given the brief of creating a shape in 3 seconds ... and so many random figures were created.

for me i created two main bodies along with my other shapes and kept manipulating them with a brief time slot between each form.

the end result to this process was we were to pick one of these forms and scrap the rest, for me i kept a simple slug scrunched form which resembled a slug ... with this we were to more on to a more sequential development train of thought.

The wave machine in motion

By the time i got to documenting the wave of the machine it had been damaged. A week left unprotected in the studio led to this but it was still functional after a few minor repairs. Though through much trial and error throughout the entire process i am delighted to say the prototype works to the full capacity of what i was hoping for.
beautiful end to the semester .. pity i didn't have more time to investigate the wave .. had alot more ideas from this concept!

the wave

here's a preview of a simply wave pattern of what the machine will produce,
